What a villa garden has to resolve<\/h2>\n
It must keep its composure in your absence.<\/strong> Drought-tolerant planting and remotely managed irrigation are not economies. They are the condition on which everything else rests. You can see the system, and adjust it, from wherever you are.<\/p>\n It should give the day its shape.<\/strong> The arrival. The pool terrace in the morning. Shade to eat under. Somewhere quiet for the late afternoon. A garden that offers one undifferentiated space offers less than it appears to.<\/p>\n It must answer the architecture.<\/strong> A contemporary house in exposed concrete asks a different question than a restored stone finca. We design the garden out of the building, never as decoration placed in front of it.<\/p>\n It should look considered from the approach.<\/strong> The impression a house makes begins at the gate. It is the part of a property most often left to chance, and the part guests remember.<\/p>\n Everything else about a house begins to age the moment it is finished. A garden does the opposite. The trees thicken, the stone weathers, the planting closes and settles until it looks as though it was always there.<\/p>\n That is why we design for permanence rather than for effect. A villa with a garden that has matured properly is a different property from the same house with a bare terrace \u2014 and it will always be read that way, by guests and by the market alike.<\/p>\n Pool terraces and surrounds in local stone. Mediterranean planting chosen for the exact exposure of the site, including the salt tolerance a coastal position demands. Irrigation designed alongside the planting rather than after it. Lighting that lets the garden be used in the evening without flooding it. Shade and privacy resolved through planting and structure before walls are considered. And, for houses used seasonally, the continuing care that keeps the design intact.<\/p>\n A villa garden is, above all, seen. From the terrace at breakfast, from the water in the afternoon, from the table when the light drops. It is composed the way a room is composed \u2014 with a foreground, a middle distance and something held at the far edge for the eye to rest on.<\/p>\n That is why proportion matters here more than variety. A villa garden that tries to contain everything reads as busy from the one place you will look at it from most. We design the view first and the planting second.<\/p>\n Where a walkable green area is genuinely wanted, we keep one \u2014 small, and exactly where it is used. The question is not whether lawn is allowed, but which lawn. We specify Grama<\/strong> (Cynodon dactylon<\/em>, known in English as bermuda grass), a Mediterranean turf that behaves differently under drought: if the water stops for a long period it goes dormant rather than dying. The surface turns brown and looks lost. It is not. With the first watering, or the first rain, it greens again.<\/p>\n And we design for the evenings. Where the table stands and how one arrives at it. Which tree gives the shade and which wall takes the wind. What lights when the sun has gone, and what is allowed to stay dark.<\/p>\n The best of it is that the intention never shows. Your guests will not remark that the garden is well designed.
