Garden Design in Mallorca

Your garden is the first thing you see when you arrive at your Mallorcan property — and the last thing guests remember. At J&P Design, we have spent over 16 years turning outdoor spaces across the island into living, breathing landscapes that feel as though they were always meant to be there.

We are not a maintenance company. We are landscape architects. That distinction matters. Where others plant shrubs, we design ecosystems. Where others lay gravel, we compose spaces. Every project begins with understanding how you live, what you love about Mallorca, and how your garden can become an extension of that.

Naturalistic Mediterranean planting with ornamental grasses in a Mallorcan garden

Our studio is based in Santanyí, in the southeast of the island — the quieter, wilder, more authentic Mallorca that our clients choose precisely because it is not the north. We work across the whole island, from Andratx to Artà, from Son Vida to Ses Salines. But the southeast is home.

What garden design in Mallorca actually means

The Mediterranean climate is both a gift and a constraint. Long dry summers, mild winters, intense sun, calcareous soil. A garden that ignores these realities will struggle within two seasons. A garden designed around them will reward you for decades.

Our garden design service in Mallorca covers every stage of the process:

  • Site analysis and concept design — We visit your property, study the orientation, soil, existing vegetation, and your lifestyle. From this we build a design concept that is yours, not a template.
  • 2D and 3D visualisation — Before a single plant is moved or a stone placed, you see your future garden and can walk through the design digitally.
  • Plant selection and sourcing — We specify plants that belong in Mallorca, not plants that survive here despite themselves. Native species, Mediterranean cultivars, drought-tolerant specimens that look spectacular without demanding constant water.
  • Irrigation design and installation — An intelligent drip irrigation system is not a luxury in Mallorca. It is the difference between a garden that thrives and one that wilts by July.
  • Construction and implementation — Our team manages the full build: earthworks, terracing, stone walls, pool surrounds, lighting, planting. One point of contact.
  • Ongoing maintenance — Structured programmes that keep the design intent intact through every season.

Where we work — garden design across Mallorca

Our projects are concentrated in the areas where our clients own property: the rural southeast, the premium urbanisations, and the quieter inland villages that have drawn discerning buyers from Germany, the UK and Switzerland for decades.

Santanyí and southeast Mallorca — Our heartland. Rural fincas, stone houses, undulating countryside. Gardens here need to feel rooted, not imported.

Andratx and Port d’Andratx — Established German and British community. Larger plots, sea views, and clients who know exactly what they want.

Son Vida, Palma — The island’s most prestigious residential area. Gardens here operate at estate level: every detail is visible, every choice is permanent.

Alaró and the inland villages — Traditional Mallorcan architecture demands gardens that respect the vernacular. Stone, wild herbs, old olive trees.

Artà and the northeast — Wilder terrain, dramatic landscapes. Gardens that frame views rather than compete with them.

Landscape design in Mallorca — beyond the garden

Garden design and landscape design are not the same discipline. A garden is a defined space you plant and maintain. A landscape is everything: how the ground falls, where the water goes, how the built form meets the terrain, what you see from each terrace and what you do not want to see.

Most of our work in Mallorca is landscape design in that fuller sense. On a finca or a hillside plot, the decisions that matter are made before any planting is specified — the levels, the retaining walls, the access, the transition from designed ground to the garrigue beyond. Pablo Monsalve is a landscape architect, and that is the scale we are trained to work at.

If your project involves terracing, significant level changes, a pool set into a slope, or a large rural plot where the garden is only part of the question, you are looking for landscape design rather than garden design alone. We do both, and we will tell you honestly which one your site actually needs.

Why J&P Design

There are gardeners in Mallorca. There are maintenance companies. There are importers of continental European styles who happen to be working on the island. We are none of these.

J&P Design was founded in 2008 by Pablo Monsalve and Juliette Wannyn — a landscape architect and a designer who chose Mallorca not as a market opportunity but as a home. Sixteen years of projects on this island have given us something that cannot be imported: an understanding of how Mallorca behaves in every season, and what a garden needs to last.

We work with a small number of clients each year. We do not scale by taking on more projects than we can do well. If your project is right for us, you will work directly with Pablo and Juliette — not be handed to a junior team.
