Landscape Architect in Mallorca

A garden is not made at the moment of planting. It is made in the decisions taken long before: how the ground is modelled, where the water goes, how the house meets the land, which view is allowed to open and which is quietly held back. Those decisions are taken once, and they carry the garden for decades.

That is the work of a landscape architect. It begins not with a plant list but with the understanding of a place.

Pablo Monsalve is a landscape architect. With the designer Juliette Wannyn he has led J&P Design from Santanyí since 2008. We design and we build, both within our own studio. That is rarer on this island than one might assume, and it is why our drawings hold what they promise.

What distinguishes a considered estate

There are gardens one enters and understands immediately, without being able to say why. The paths lead where you already wanted to go. The shade falls where you want to sit. The view opens in the right place and is held back in the wrong one.

That quality is neither accident nor a question of budget. It is the result of design — of someone having read the topography, followed the sun across the day, and walked the paths before they were built.

Our work is shaped by the naturalistic planting movement — Piet Oudolf, Tom Stuart-Smith — translated to the conditions of this island. The result is a garden that appears to have grown out of the site rather than to have been placed upon it.

A garden that carries the value of the house

A garden made properly is not an expense to be written off. It belongs to the property — and unlike almost everything else about a house, it improves with time. Trees gain stature, walls gain patina, planting gains density and inevitability.

A house is never judged alone. It is judged with its setting. Anyone who owns an estate of this kind knows it: the first impression is formed at the approach, long before a door is opened. A garden that carries the architecture lifts the whole property — and it does so permanently.

How we work

We begin with the place. Orientation, soil, wind, water, existing planting, topography and the relationship with the wider landscape. Without that foundation, every design is a guess.

You see the garden before it exists. From the analysis comes a design with full 3D visualisation. You can walk through it and decide at your own pace. Nothing is built that you have not already understood.

We build it ourselves. Earthworks, walls, paths, pool surrounds, irrigation, planting and lighting, coordinated by our own team. One point of contact, one responsibility, no seam at which quality is lost.

And we stay. A garden conceived over years needs the same hand over years. We accompany it for as long as you wish.

Why design and build belong together

The most common way a good garden project fails in Mallorca is the gap between the drawing and the site. A studio designs, a contractor builds, and in the end nobody is accountable for the result.

If you spend most of the year in London, Hamburg or Zurich, you cannot supervise that gap. With us it does not exist.

How an estate presents itself

The first impression of a house is not made at the door. It is made at the approach: in the way the drive opens, which trees accompany it, what is revealed and what is still withheld until one has stepped out of the car.

That sequence can be designed, and it is what makes a property read as considered long before anyone comments on the architecture. A landscape architect draws not only spaces but the order in which they are experienced.

What remains is a house that sits in its ground as though it could not sit anywhere else. The intention never announces itself. One simply notices that everything is where it should be.
